‘Victory is like glue... It binds the team’

EXCLUSIVE

London: “A great win and I’m particularly happy for (captain Mahendra Singh) Dhoni... Zabardaast jeet rahi hai,” Kapil Dev told The Telegraph, at Lord’s, on Monday.

Kapil, it may be recalled, had been the captain during India’s only other Test victory at Lord’s, back in 1986.

The one-on-one took place moments after India wrested a 1-0 lead in the five-Test series.

Excerpts...

“Every win is special, but some mean that bit more... A feature of each one is that the team comes together even more...

“Victory is like glue... It binds the team as one, which is great for the future...

“I’m particularly happy for Dhoni as there were question marks over his team’s ability to get over the line outside the subcontinent...

“That has been answered...

“The win in 1986 meant a lot to me personally, too... Why? Because, under my captaincy, that was our first Test victory overseas...

“We went on to win that series and I hope it’s the same this time as well...

“Cricket is a team sport, so I wouldn’t like to single out individuals. However...

“Ajinkya Rahane, Murali Vijay and Ravindra Jadeja batted very well... Then, Bhuvi (Bhuvneshwar Kumar) batted and bowled superbly... And, one can’t forget Ishant Sharma...

Sher tha aakhri din pe. Aggressive and spot on...

“Before the series began, I’d written that Ishant was my man. That, if he came good, India would do very well... Just have a look at what he did...

“It has been a great victory, but the boys shouldn’t get carried away. The series, after all, remains to be won.”
