Teachers press for changes

Kokrajhar, July 21: The Kokrajhar district committee of the Asom Sikshak Karmachari Aikya Mancha staged a two-hour dharna at Raasmela field here today on its various demands.

The demands included re-amendment of the Venture Education Institution Provincialisation of Services Act, 2011-12, in the next session of the state Assembly and rectification of the anomalies found in the initial phases of provincialisation.

Over a hundred teachers participated in the protest, displaying placards which read “no justice no rest”. A memorandum was submitted to the state education minister through the Kokrajhar deputy commissioner’s office .

President of the district committee of the Mancha, Pradeep Kumar Bargayary, said they would like to congratulate the government for its kind initiative to provincialise the venture education institutions of the state after a long gap of the 21 years. “But anomalies still remain and the act needs further amendment . We urge the state government to rectify these anomalies in the next Assembly session,” he said.

The Mancha also demanded inclusion of all venture education institutions of the state established before January 1, 2006, but recognised by the government later.

Bargayary also mentioned that some schools are shown as non-recommended because of an error in the data provided by the district information system for education of the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan.

A proposal to correct the error has been submitted 10 to 12 months back.

Bargayary said if the education department does not address their demands, they would intensify the agitation.
