Traders foil robbery bid, nab 1

Two men posing as buyers tried to rob a jewellery boutique on Theatre Road but failed after the owner raised the alarm.

Traders in neighbouring stores — alerted by the cries of Kusum Bhalotia of Kusum Jewellery Boutique — could catch one of the two suspects. The other, who was apparently armed, managed to flee. Police said the two men had entered the boutique on the first floor of BK Market on Theatre Road around 3.20pm on Monday.

“They asked the salesman to show them mangalsutras. As they were being shown the items, the older of the two men took out a revolver from his waist and aimed it at the salesman,” said an officer of Shakespeare Sarani police station.

“Owner Kusum Bhalotia, who was also in the store, lost no time and started screaming. This apparently scared the two men who started to run,” the officer added.

Traders from adjacent stores started chasing the duo and caught the younger of them. Police identified him as Rahul Kushwa, 20, a resident of Giridih in Jharkhand.
