Guwahati, July 18: Northeast Frontier Railway Sports Club annexed their first title of the season, defeating Assam State Electricity Board Sports Club 2-1 in the final of the Premier Agro Bio-Tech 10th N.N. Bhattacharya Knockout Football Tournament here at Nehru Stadium here today.

The railmen came close to finding the back of the net in the sixth minute of play.

ASEB defender Mitradev Swargiary produced a spectacular goal-line save to deny them an initial lead. Sibra Narzary’s fine free kick from the right flank found Chayaram Basumatary inside the box but the latter’s strike was well saved by Swargiary.

Sibra Narzary with the 11th minute free kick from a few steps outside the box found Sasanka Chanda whose attempt could only find the safe hands of the ASEB custodian Daoga Brahma.

The ASEB side faced a major blow in the extended minutes of the first half with Priyo Kr Singh being shown the red card owing to two consecutive bookings in the match.

In the second half, the railmen finally found their upper hand in the match with a fine goal by Sibra Narzary in the 54th minute.

A 10-man ASEB side did their best to find their equaliser in the 86th minute. William Gangte from the left flank set the ball rolling for Ramsangliana, whose long range shot from outside the box left N.I. Singh with no reply.

It was Sibra Narzary again to his side’s rescue as his well elevated cross found Sanjay Sil who made no mistake in finding the back of the net in the additional minutes of the regular 90 minutes of play.

The champions got Rs 10,000 while ASEB SC had to be content with Rs 5,000. Sanjay Boro of ASEB was adjudged the Player of the Tournament.
