1 hurt in car crash

A teenager suffered whiplash injuries on his forehead and hands when the Honda Civic driven by his friend rammed into a lamp post on Dufferin Road, running parallel to Red Road, on Friday evening.

An officer at Maidan police station said college student Rahul Gupta was driving the car on the wrong lane.

He said Rahul apparently panicked when he saw a minibus approaching from the opposite direction. “He took a sharp right to avoid colliding with the north-bound bus. The car jumped onto the elevated tram track before hitting a lamp post.”

Rahul and three friends were in the car. They were on their way home in New Alipore.

Pawan Shukla, who was sitting on the left of the rear seat, suffered critical injuries as he was thrown forward when the car hit the post. The 18-year-old was not wearing the seat belt and he needed 17 stitches on his forehead.

He was treated at SSKM Hospital before his family took him to CMRI. A friend sitting beside Pawan received minor injuries. Rahul and a friend in the left front seat escaped unhurt as the safety bags inflated on impact.
