Alastair Cook is a fighter...

EXCLUSIVE
Alastair Cook

London: “Well, that’s the way of the world, but I’m fighting (to regain form)... I’m still here as England’s captain.”

That was Alastair Cook, during a brief informal interaction with The Telegraph ahead of the second Test, at Lord’s.

Cook, who not too long ago was a captain who could do no wrong, has been facing the heat after England got thrashed 0-5 in the last Ashes.

Worse, more recently, even Sri Lanka won the Test series, in England, 1-0.

Cook’s “way of the world” comment was in response to all the criticism directed at him, often from people who’d once hailed him.

When told that one innings could turn it around, Cook smiled and said: “Thank you... Yes, let’s hope so. It’s not that I’m not working hard.”

Cook’s slump in form notwithstanding, he remains one of the giants of his generation.

The doubters only need to look at Cook’s figures: 25 hundreds and in excess of 8,000 runs in Test cricket alone.
