ASUS eyes bigger pie

Calcutta, July 16: Taiwanese computer hardware maker ASUS aims to garner a 5 per cent share of the smartphone market by 2015.

The company is betting on its recently launched ZenFone series to reach the target.

ASUS plans to occupy the No. 5 spot in the segment comprising personal computers, tablets and smartphones and compete with the dominant players through smart pricing.

ASUS today said it had sold close to 40,000 units of the ZenFone since July 10 and had penetrated 300 cities already. It has three models now.

“We are No. 4 in notebook. We want it to be more than 10 per cent. A three-in-one market (PCs, tablets and smartphones) requires all products to be covered. If we want to hit No. 5, the smartphone market share has to be more than 5 per cent. In this year, if we can reach top 5, tablets should hit 8 per cent. Our major market is the consumer market, but we will start to look at government projects,” said Peter Chang, regional director (South Asia) & country manager (India), system business group (India), ASUS India.
