Minister to head Olympics body

Imphal, July 15: Public health engineering minister Irengbam Hemochandra Singh was elected president of Manipur Olympic Association yesterday.

Hemochandra Singh, who is also the president of Manipur Rifle Association, defeated former minister and president of Manipur Badminton Association Bijoy Koijam in a straight fight.

Hemochandra got 35 votes while Koijam secured 20.

Manipur Weightlifting Association secretary Sunil Elangbam was elected the secretary of the MOA, defeating Laishram Manglem Singh, secretary of Manipur Handball Association, by 11 votes, also in a straight fight.

Parliamentary secretary in-charge of youth affairs and sports Mairembam Prithviraj Singh was elected treasurer of the association.

He defeated N. Phoni, the secretary of Manipur Wrestling Association, by 15 votes.

Six vice-presidents were also elected.
