Police station for Dassam security

-Thanas to come up at RIMS, 3 more sites

Beautiful, but unsafe, Dassam Falls is set for a security overhaul with the Ranchi administration planning a full-fledged police station at the tourist hotspot that is also notorious for drowning incidents as criminal activities.

The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by deputy commissioner Vinay Kumar Choubey on Monday. The thana will replace the existing police picket positioned at a turn off NH-33 towards the entrance of Taimara valley that leads to the falls. The police department is now working out modalities like the total requirement for land.

“New police stations will be set up at several places in Ranchi district. One of them is Dassam Falls. After assessing all security aspects, we are planning to build the police station at the same location where the thana outpost exists. The spot is some 3-4km from Dassam Falls. Hence, the entire stretch of NH-33, which is equally notorious for loots and other unlawful activities, can be monitored from that point,” said Choubey, adding that district police would take up the job soon.

The other places to boast new police stations are Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), McCluskieganj, Umedanda (Thakurgaon) and Jagannathpur.

According to the deputy commissioner, they are looking for land in Umedanda while the police station in Bariatu will be shifted to RIMS as the hospital has agreed to provide space.

For Jagannathpur, HEC will provide land, but details are awaited.

“Earlier, a thana was proposed in Thakurgaon, but the plan was shifted to Umedanda as the senior superintendent of police wanted one in this area due to security reasons. So, we are hunting for space at Umedanda,” Choubey said.

Of all the places, a full functioning police station was absolutely crucial for Dassam Falls, which attracts thousands of tourists from within the state and outside.

With the nearest police station being a good 15km away in Bundu, incidents of snatchings, thefts and eve-teasing are very common at the scenic spot. Add to it the menace of local residents fleecing visitors in the name of providing hospitality services.

Lack of adequate security at the falls is another reason why drowning deaths are maximum in the treacherous waters.

While Ranchi SSP Prabhat Kumar couldn’t be contacted for his comments, a local police officer further explained how a full-fledged thana would help all.

“Police picket is a makeshift arrangement devoid of proper facilities. As a result, policemen, at times, remain unavailable from the post. A proper thana will ensure the presence of at least half a dozen policemen round the clock,” he said.
