Germany rode a lone strike by Mario Goetze to emerge champions of the 2014 World Cup. Following are the key moments of the match:
2nd min: Germany had the first look at the rival goal when Marcos Rojo brought down Thomas Mueller near the box. The ensuing free-kick was wasted. Argentina went on the counter attack immediately, and Gonzalo Higuain’s attempt at the goal went just wide.
5th min: Germany looked dangerous when Philipp Lahm found space on the right and passed it to Mueller. His goal mouth cross was cleared in the nick of time by Lucas Bigila.
9th min: Lionel Messi’s first magical touch was evident when he raced past Mats Hummels in a flash, but there was no Argentina player in the Germany box to receive the pass.
18th min: Ezequiel Garay and Christoph Kramer went for a high ball near the Argentina box. The former collided with the German. Kramer looked like being hit on the head and got up only after a couple of minutes.
20th min: Argentina had an unexpected chance when Toni Kroos was trying to head the ball back towards the goalkeeper and Higuain intercepted it. With only the goalkeeper Manuel Neuer to beat, the Argentine took an awfully wide shot that proved harmless.
22nd min: The Argentine fans were hugely disappointed when Higuain wrongfooted Neuer to steer a clever shot into the net, only to be ruled off-side. Coach Alejandro Sabella had started the celebrations, but checked himself at the last minute.
31st min: Kramer, who was still bleeding through his nose and was looking dazed, was substituted. Andre Schurrle came in his place.
33rd min: The referee had to use the yellow card for the first time when Benedikt Howedes was booked for an awful studs-up lunge at Pablo Zabaleta as the wing-back was trying to break down the right. It was a terrible challenge, connecting squarely with Zabaleta’s shin and the German was surely lucky to escape the red card.
36th min: Mueller was able to break through the Argentine defence and then cut back sharply to provide the ball to Schurrle. The substitute midfielder did take a crack at the goal, but Romero was there to intercept.
39th min: Argentina retaliated with Messi, as their captain went past Hummels and Jerome Boateng with consummate ease, only to find a host of German defenders waiting to intercept his pass.
45th min: The best chance of the first half came the Germans’ way, off a corner by Tony Kroos. Howedes jumped over his marker to head strongly, but it came off the post. Mueller’s attempt to go for the rebound was whistled down for an offside.
46th min: Sergio Aguero replaced Ezequiel Lavezzi.
47th min: Messi romped clear through the left after receiving a through pass from Lucas Biglia. He rushed in and with only Neuer to beat he took an unusually poor shot, low and wide, which went off target.
52nd min: Schurrle was at the receiving end, fouled by Zabaleta. The referee had a talk with the Argentine.
62nd min: Schurrle went past Zabaleta down the left wing. His fast, low cross was meant for Mueller, but it failed to reach the him and went of play.
65th min: Aguero was booked for a foul on Bastian Schweinsteiger. The Germans were dominating the show at this point.
71st min: Germany continued to put pressure, as Mueller, Mesut Ozil and Schurrle got deep into the Argentine area in a combined move. Mueller had the chance to finish when he had only Romero to beat, but he let the ball hit his shin and roll into the safe hands of the custodian.
77th min: Higuain replaced by Rodrigo Palacio.
85th min: Fernando Gago comes in for Enzo Perez. This was Sabella’s third and final substitution.
86th min: Miroslav Klose came off the ground to make way for Mario Goetze. He received huge cheers from the spectators.
91st min: Germany looked like taking the lead when Schurrle found space on the left and then hammered a shot. Romero was quick to parry the ball away.
93rd min: Aguero powered down the left and cut in towards the goal. But his aimless shot went out of play.
97th min: Palacio had a golden chance to score, but his effort to lob the ball over Neuer saw the ball going over the bar.
109th min: Schweinsteiger went for an aerial tussle with Aguero. The Argentine hit the German’s face, drawing blood from under his right eye. Schweinsteiger had to go off for treatment. Aguero was lucky to escape a red card.
113th min: Goal. Schurlle went down the left and sent a perfect pass for Goetze, who chested it down and finished brilliantly with a left footer past Romero. A classic goal.
