Tura, July 13: A 28-year-old woman was raped by a group of men today at Pipulbari, along the Assam-Meghalaya border. The woman was alone in her house, when a group of 15 unidentified men barged in.
The incident took place around 2am. Meghalaya police rescued her this morning, when villagers found her lying unconscious at a nearby road, close to a forest.
Pipulbari village, about 48km from Tura, is under Garobadha police station. The victim is undergoing treatment at Hatsingimari public health centre in Assam’s Dhubri district.
Superintendent of police, West Garo Hills, Mukesh Singh, said, “The woman was lying unconscious near the road at Tangaon village, which falls under Assam. We have handed over the case to Mankachar police station.”
According to the victim, a group of dacoits barged into her house at 2am, while she was sleeping. “They took away gold ornaments, two mobile handsets and Rs 1 lakh cash.”
Her husband is a trader and was away at the time of the incident. The goons had sharp weapons and one even pointed a gun at her.
“They kept a gun on my forehead and threatened to kill me. I tried to escape from their clutches but they chased and caught me. They then put me into a vehicle and drove me to a nearby forest and raped me,” she added.
Based on her statement, the police have identified Kabir Ali and Zahirul Islam, who are also from Pipulbari.
“After raping me, Kabir abused me with the intention to kill but I became unconscious,” she narrated. In her statement, she also said her husband was away for the last three days as he was threatened by a group. They had threatened to kill him if he did not pay up.
Mankachar police station has registered the case as the victim’s house is under Ass-am’s jurisdiction. The police are investigating the matter. The accused are absconding.
The victim is newly married and living with her husband in the village. She is from Barpeta district in Assam.
Mostafa Kabir, an activist, said, “It is shameful that such a heinous crime was committed during the holy month of Ramazan.”
The accused should be arrested immediately and punished. It is an unpardonable act. The victim is battling for her life.”
On June 20, a nine-year-old girl from neighbouring Mankachar was raped at New Bhaitbari in West Garo Hills by her own uncle. The accused Ataur Rehman, 32, was arrested for the crime.
On June 11, a teenager raped an eight-year-old at Chibinang in West Garo Hills. He was arrested but later granted bail.
