Lured with class notes and raped

Malda, July 11: A Class X girl in Malda was allegedly lured out of her home by a school senior on the pretext of giving her class notes and gang-raped by him and his three friends yesterday.

The 16-year-old girl, daughter of a house painter, was found unconscious, her clothes tattered, in a corn field 500 metres from her home. Villagers admitted her to Malda Medical College Hospital, where tests are being done.

The Class X girl has named the senior in her complaint to police, following which he has been arrested. The girl could not recognise the three other youths.

According to the complaint, the senior, who studies in Class XI in the same school as the girl, called her around 5pm yesterday and told her to come out of the house to take the lecture notes he had allegedly brought with him.

“The youth had been disturbing her for some time, sending her lewd messages on her cellphone. The girl came out and saw three youths accompanying the senior. She did not know them. The youths grabbed her, pressed a cloth apparently dipped in chloroform to her nose and took her to the field. When she came to, she was in hospital,” a police officer said, quoting the girl.

The girl’s mother, a homemaker, said: “We panicked when she did not return home even after 7pm. Some villagers found her in the corn field and took her to the hospital.” She added: “He (the senior) had been bothering my daughter for some days. Yesterday, he and his friends gang-raped her.”

Malda superintendent of police Prasun Banerjee said the arrested youth had been remanded in three days’ police custody.

“We are interrogating him to identify the others. A case of gang rape has been started. We are awaiting the medical report,” he added.
