Siliguri, July 7: Atul Roy, the erstwhile president of the Kamtapur Peoples’ Party (KPP), today announced the formation of a political party to carry out his movement for a separate Kamtapur state and recognition of the Rajbangshi language.
“We have formed the All Kamtapur People’s Party which is a new party representing the Kamtapuri (Rajbangshi) people of north Bengal and the Northeast. It will work for the development of the people, the region and strive to achieve our old demands of a separate Kamtapur state (comprising the north Bengal districts and four contiguous districts of Assam) and recognition of our language,” Atul said at a news conference today.
Atul is the president of the new party.
His decision to float the new party follows his expulsion from the KPP. Yesterday, KPP general secretary Nikhil Roy said Atul had been expelled from the party for anti-party activities.
“Some of his recent statements and activities were against the party’s constitution and guidelines. Among these was his decision to support the BJP in the general elections,” Nikhil said.
