District archery units seethe at no-poll

Simmering discontent among affiliated districts against the state archery outfit’s way of functioning threatens to snowball into a major controversy in days to come.

Fourteen out of the 19 affiliated district units and eight clubs has threatened to form a parallel outfit if the annual general meeting (read elections) of Jharkhand Archery Association was not held within the next 10 days.

Members of the disgruntled districts, who assembled at the archery grounds at JRD Tata Sports Complex on Sunday for the emergency meeting, lambasted the state association for not holding elections for the past five years.

Notably, the tenure of each office-bearer of the association is supposed to be of two years. However, the incumbent team has been holding office since 2009.

“We are fed up with the state outfit’s style of functioning. We will be forced to form a parallel body if the association does not hold polls within 10 days,” said Harinder Singh, a trustee of Jharkhand Archery Association.

According to him, their request to association president Sanjiv Paul to call the annual general meeting has failed to yield any result. Most importantly, he added, Paul has been transferred to Calcutta.

“Besides, the state body does not have a full-fledged secretary and day-to-day affairs is being looked after by a working secretary for the past few years. The association has not organised a state championship in two years,” Singh rued.

Criticising working secretary L. Murty for his “callous” attitude, Singh said: “An experienced compound archer like Jhano Hansda has not been selected for the Asian Games preparatory camp owing to the callous attitude of the working secretary.”

He added that in absence of a full-fledged secretary, deserving archers were not getting government scholarships.

Association working secretary Murty said he would come up with a reply at an appropriate time. “Let the district units say whatever they want to. I will answer only when time comes,” he added.
