GSA’s annual football tourney from Tuesday

Guwahati, July 6: The Premier Agro Bio-Tech 10th N.N. Bhattacharya Knockout Football Tournament will be held at Nehru Stadium here from July 8 to 18.

The Guwahati Sports Association’s annual tournament, that usually marks the beginning of the football season for some of the top-ranking sides, will feature 10 teams.

Officially announcing this here today, GSA vice-president Dilip Sankar Saikia said, “This is the 10th edition of the tournament and we are looking forward to organising it successfully. We are thankful to Biren Kalita for his assistance in sponsoring the tournament for the third year.”

Premier Agro Bio-Tech, a Barpeta-based small-scale industry, has been the title sponsor for GSA’s season opener N.N. Bhattacharya Football Tournament since 2012.

“Ten teams will participate in the knockout tournament, including last editions runners-up Northeast Frontier Railway Sports Club. Defending champions Green Valley Sports Club has not confirmed their participation,” said Bhola Boro, the secretary of GSA.

The champions will walk away with Rs 10,000 while the runners-up will receive the Simantajyoti Dutta Kalita Trophy and have to be content with Rs 5,000.

The Best Player of the Tournament will receive the R.N. Bhattacharya trophy and a cash reward of Rs 3,000.

Promoted to the Super Division Football League last season, Ganga Sports Club will kick off their campaign with the inaugural match of the tournament against Gauhati Town Club on Tuesday.

Northeast Frontier Railway Sports Club and Navajyoti Club will start their campaign from the quarter-finals, by dint of their performance in the previous edition.
