Calcutta: Antonio Lopez Habas is likely to be named as Atletico de Kolkata coach on Monday.
Habas, 57, has impressive credentials, having managed teams like Valencia and Sevilla. He was also the coach of Bolivia national team during his 24-year-old career.
He last coached South African club Wits University for a year before resigning in 2013.
According to sources, the city-based Indian Super League (ISL) franchise had shortlisted a few coaches before settling down on Habas.
“The franchise had shortlisted a few coaches. Then the names were sent to the league committee for approval.
“The committee approved Habas’s name and the franchise didn’t delay in signing him,” the source said. The name of the coach and the marquee player will be officially announced by chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday.
Atletico de Kolkata have also roped in former Real Madrid midfielder Borja Fernandez. The 33-year-old Spanish midfielder is the city-based ISL franchise’s first signing.
“We had a lot of discussions before signing him. He has immense experience of playing at the top level in Europe and will strengthen our midfield,” the source said.
Borja played for Real from 2003-06 and was part of the famed Galacticos side featuring Zinedine Zidane, Luis Figo, Ronaldo and David Beckham.
He had also turned out for Spanish sides Getafe, Real Valladolid and Deportivo La Coruna.
Borja tweeted he may never play in Spain again. “After 13 years in Spain, I decide to take a break and have an adventure abroad… Superliga India: Kolkata Atletico Madrid
