Search on for girl ‘attackers’

Guwahati, July 4: Police have launched a search for three persons, including a bus driver, in connection with the alleged attempt to sexually harass a 24-year-old woman yesterday morning on a minibus.

Senior superintendent of police (city), A.P. Tiwari, said the woman had told the police that she jumped off the bus through a window around 11.30am after two persons made “lewd gestures”. A traffic policeman called an ambulance and rushed her to hospital.

The minibus was heading towards Nagaon and the woman had boarded at Khanapara close to the official residence of chief minister Tarun Gogoi. The woman is from Morigaon district.

“She told us there were only two persons in the bus when she boarded it. As the bus started moving, she told us that the two persons made offensive gestures. Fearing sexual harassment, she jumped off the bus. The girl received minor injuries, as the bus was not moving at high speed. We have identified the vehicle and alerted our police stations to search for the accused,” Tiwari told this correspondent.

The woman’s condition has improved and the police have informed her family. “We are doing a thorough inquiry and will take necessary action according to law,” he said.
