New Delhi: India’s hopes of hosting the 2019 Asian Games virtually ended on Wednesday, when the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) refused to extend the deadline for submitting the bid.
“We have received a letter from the OCA today… they have refused to grant the 15-day extension we sought for submitting the bid. Since July 1 was the last date, we stand no chance for hosting the Games,” a senior official of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) told The Telegraph.
The official said that the OCA has asked the IOA to let them know “in a couple of days” whether the government was ready to back the bid. “In that case, OCA could reconsider their decision. Under the current circumstances, it is not possible to receive a guarantee from the government in two days,” the official said.
