Showcause to Raiganj docs

Raiganj, July 1: Raiganj district hospital served showcause notices on two doctors yesterday for going on leave without intimation and lending the outpatient departments vacant. Child specialist N.C. Pal and general physician N.G. Parey have been asked to reply within seven days.

Yesterday, the OPDs opened at 9am. But the doctors did not turn up even after 11am. “Patients and relatives blocked a nearby road alleging inadequate services. Police persuaded them to lift the blockade. The agitators filed a complaint with the hospital superintendent,” said a source.

Acting superintendent Somnath Chatterjee said: “Two doctors who were on duty in two OPDs were on leave. They had neither informed us nor handed over the charge to others. We have served showcause notices. They will have to reply in seven days. If they cannot satisfy us, appropriate legal steps would be taken.” The duo could not be contacted.

Hospital trouble

The surgical ward and eye department of Balurghat district hospital have been lying defunct for a week with the only surgeon falling ill and the eye specialist in charge of indoor and outdoor units taking leave. Acting superintendent Biswaranjan Metia said: “We have informed the higher officials.” The superintendent is on leave.

Around 800-1,000 patients visit the 316-bed hospital daily.
