Sawyan inspects venue

Guwahati, July 1: North East United FC co-owners Larsing M. Sawyan and Sanjiv Naraine, accompanied by Assam sports minister Ajit Singh and sports department officials, today assessed the progress of work at Indira Gandhi Athletics Stadium.

The venue is being prepared for the proposed Indian Super League football tournament in September. With new grass on the pitch and renovation of the dressing rooms and other facilities being done on a war footing, the franchise owners, who are partners with actor John Abraham, expressed satisfaction and hoped “everything will be ready by September”.

“Everything seems to going in the right direction. The Assam government has been very proactive in getting the infrastructure ready. We appreciate their attitude,” Sawyan, a vice-president of the AIFF and owner of Shillong Lajong FC, said.

He hoped the tournament could commence by the third Saturday or Sunday of September.

The minister directed the authorities concerned to leave no stone unturned to get things ready for the ISL. “The upgrade of floodlights, scoreboard and other faciltities are being initiated and will be completed very soon,” Singh said.
