Dibrugarh, July 1: Educationists have an important role to play for restoration of peace and stability in Assam, said chief minister Tarun Gogoi said during the golden jubilee celebration of Dibrugarh University here today.
“The role of educationists is significant in understanding the problems that have been a hindrance to peace and stability in Assam. Educationists need to solve the decades-old problem of violence and erosion in Assam,” Gogoi said.
A premier institution of Assam, Dibrugarh University today completed 50 years.
Gogoi inaugurated the golden jubilee celebration at Rang Ghar auditorium on the premises of the institution.
Speaking on the institution’s contributions over the decades, the chief minister said the university could play an important role in strengthening the economy and culture of the region. “The thrust should be on science and technology,” he added.
“Importance need to be given to stress management, conflict management, photography and skill development because these are new courses and would add a new dimension in the education sector.”
Gautam Biswas, a professor from IIT Guwahati, spoke on the need to bring in changes in higher education and introduce research to meet social needs.
Earlier, the university’s vice-chancellor, A.K. Buragohain, in his welcome speech outlined the journey of Dibrugarh University from its inception in 1965 till today. He also talked about some centres, which would usher in cultural as well as economic development of the region.
Speaking during a meeting held in Sivasagar to commemorate the first edition of Sivasagar Divas today, chief minister Gogoi recalled that immense contribution of Sivasagar in all sectors.
He recalled the founder of the Ahom dynasty Siu-Ka-Pha, who laid the foundation of the Assamese society.
“Siu-Ka-Pha assimilated with the local people after he came to Assam. He did not enforce Ahom culture on the people.”
He released a tourist guide and souvenir on the occasion.
