New outfit in Barak

Silchar, June 27: A new militant outfit, United Democratic Liberation Army (Dhananjoy), has raised its head in the border district of Karimganj in south Assam.

Sources in the police special branch (intelligence) hinted that the outfit has sprouted from an old militant gang, United Democratic Liberation Army (Dhananjoy), in Barak valley.

Karimganj district police recently made a breakthrough in dealing with this new terror network. In the past two days, a posse of armed police and CRPF personnel, led by Karimganj district additional superintendent of police Navin Singh, on the basis of a tip-off, picked up UDLA (Dhurvajoy) activist Darabram Reang, 32, from a village in Tripura’s border with Karimganj.

A police official in Karimganj today said Reang revealed the location of the gang’s hideout in Bazaricherra village in Patherkandi block in Karimganj district, from where combined forces of the district police and CRPF hauled up two other rebels yesterday at the crack of dawn.

They were identified as Niranjan Reang, 40, and Joysingh Reang, 28, both residents of Medli village in Karimganj district.

The police suspect that all these arrested cadres belonged to a group which kidnapped Arindam Kar, forest supervisor of the Hindustan Paper Corporation in Panchgram, 25km from here, on the night of April 26. He was released by the gang after three days, reportedly after an undisclosed amount of ransom was paid by his family.

Intelligence sources said this gang now has a minuscule number of cadres, having hideouts in both Karimganj and adjoining Hailakandi district. The gang has specialised in extortion and kidnapping for collecting ransom from victims to buy arms for their plan to create largescale disturbance in the twin districts.

This gang is also reportedly involved in the two recent abductions of two wealthy farmers, Prasanta Vaishnav and Basudev Baishnav, from Rakhalbasti village under Ratabari block of Karimganj district.

Dhurvajoy, the leader of this new outfit, is known to be a once senior member of the ULDA (Dhananjoy), but after his tiff with his master he quit in a huff and formed this new gang.

Dhananjoy is now said to be in a nascent state in Mizoram from where he has been masterminding his terror operations in neighbouring Karimganj and Hailakandi districts.
