Doctors thrashed

Alipurduar, June 26: The refusal by a doctor at the Falakata Rural Hospital to provide an oxygen cylinder to a lady cardiac patient who had been referred to Alipurduar for better treatment last night triggered a rampage by her son and three friends in the female ward.

Doctor Avishek Naha said rules didn’t allow anyone to take oxygen cylinders out of the hospital. “Bipin Chandra Sarkar and three others beat up Naha and another doctor, yanked out saline drips from patients in the female ward and ransacked furniture and medical items,” said a source.

Sarkar from Jaichandpur had brought his mother to the Falakata hospital around 11pm. “Naha administered oxygen to the woman and referred her to Alipurduar subdivisional hospital. Sarkar asked for an oxygen cylinder, but Naha refused,” said the source.

An angry Sarkar and three of his friends pinned Naha down on the ground and assaulted him. “Suman Rudra, the Falakata block medical officer of health, reached the spot and he wasn’t spared either. The four men damaged syringes, cotton and furniture. They also pulled out saline drips given to 16 women,” said the source.

The BMOH said Naha had filed a police complaint and proceeded on leave.
