Car-lifter arrested in Golaghat

Golaghat, June 25: Golaghat police yesterday arrested another car-lifter, Jayanta Bora, from Sialekhati area here.

The police here have been carrying out a special operation against car-lifters for the past month. With the recent arrest, altogether 15 car-lifters have been arrested.

A few days back, acting on specific information, a team of Golaghat police led by officer-in-charge Hiranya Kumar Dohutia apprehended a gang of four car-lifters from Silonijan in Karbi Anglong district.

The arrested persons were identified as Lal alias Nirmal Gogoi, Bijoy Gogoi, Benu Boro and Bidyut Bikash Barua. The police seized a magazine of a 9mm pistol with live cartridges.

According to their confession, the police said they usually sell a Bolero for Rs 2 lakh and a motorcycle for Rs 20,000 and their main market is Dimapur in Nagaland.

The police said out of the arrested car-lifters, Lal and Benu Boro have been actively involved in lifting 30 vehicles from Golaghat and Jorhat districts. Till now, the police have recovered one white Bolero and a Pulsar motorcycle from them.

They stole vehicles from Golaghat and Jorhat districts and later sold them in Dimapur and Imphal in Manipur. “Jorhat police have been looking for them in connection with several car-lifting cases,” Dohutia told The Telegraph.

They sometimes even steal the cars with co-operation of the car owners in a bid to claim insurance money, Dohutia added.

Sources in police said the car-lifters have now shifted their attention to an alternate route. Now, the safe and favourite passage of the car lifters is NH 37. From Komargaon they come to Golaghat via Khumtai, from where they proceed to Dimapur. More than 10 car-lifting cases have been registered in Golaghat police station till date.
