Rio de Janeiro: England’s football players have apologised for being eliminated from the World Cup, saying they were “gutted” not to have performed better.
Wayne Rooney and Joe Hart were among members of the squad to publicly lament their exit from the tournament on Friday.
Hart said: “I can’t thank people enough for making this trip to Brazil, for making the efforts at home, for staying up for us, for revolving their work around us. I can speak on behalf of the lads that we’ve not left anything to chance, we have tried everything.”
In a statement posted on his Facebook page, Rooney said he was ‘devastated and gutted’ to be out of the World Cup. “Going into each game, we had great belief in ourselves but unfortunately it hasn’t worked out,” he wrote.
“Sorry to all the fans that travelled and at home that we haven’t done better...devastated and gutted!”
