Garo rebel arrested

Tura, June 20: Meghalaya police today arrested a hardcore cadre of A’chik Songna An’pachakgipa Kotok (ASAK) from a village near Purakhasia in West Garo Hills.

The cadre, Balsrang Ch. Momin, 28, was picked up after a raid in his house at Junungpara in Purakhasia, along the Indo-Bangladesh border, nearly 48km from Tura.

“We had specific inputs that the cadre was operating in Purakhasia and its adjoining villages. His house was raided and picked up at 10.30 am today. He has confessed that he is part of the outfit. Interrogation is on,” said superintendent of police, West Garo Hills, Mukesh Singh.

ASAK is a breakaway faction of the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) and is headed by the former finance secretary of the GNLA, Reding T. Sangma. The outfit was formed in February this year.
