Cop plea to slap Arms Act case on MLA

Bolpur, June 19: The police officer investigating a Birbhum triple-murder case in which Trinamul MLA Manirul Islam is named in the FIR has sought the district magistrate’s permission to charge the leader and two others under the Arms Act.

The Labhpur MLA was not named in the chargesheet submitted in court on Tuesday.

District magistrate P.M.K. Gandhi said this evening: “I have received the application from the police but have not yet gone through it.”

Police sources said a supplementary chargesheet could be drawn up, naming Manirul and the two other accused.

Three brothers known to be CPM supporters had been murdered during a meeting Manirul had allegedly called in June 2010 to resolve a dispute between two groups of residents. A brother of the victims had lodged an FIR accusing Manirul and 51 others of the murders.

A senior police officer said three brothers of the three victims had, in their statements before a magistrate, mentioned that Manirul was not present during the murders.

Manirul refused comment today. “Don’t ask anything about the murder case.”
