Sambalpur, June 16: A gang of robbers decamped with Rs 16 lakh from Utkal Grameen Bank at Chiplima, 35 kilometres away from here, this afternoon.
Police said that five masked robbers had come to the bank in a car. Three of them entered into the bank, while two waited outside to keep an eye on the surroundings. The bank manager, cashier and the peon were present when the incident took place. There was no security guard in the bank.
The robbers first locked the manager and the peon in a room at gunpoint. They also tied the hands of the cashier. They intimidated the cashier with a sharp weapon and asked him to take them to the strong room. They took out the cash from the strong room and put it in a bag and fled the spot.
Around Rs 24 lakh was there in the bank.
However, they could not trace the remaining amount as it was wrapped in a cloth.The bank staff managed to free themselves after the robbers fled the spot. On being informed by the bank staff about the incident, the police rushed to the spot.
