Jawan held for torture

Balangir, June 16: Police arrested a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawan and his parents for cheating and torturing his wife for dowry.

Jyoti Ranjan Suna and his parents from Beherapali have also been accused of having suppressed the fact that he was married before. They were remanded in judicial custody today after a court rejected their bail plea.

Jyoti Ranjan, who works as a CRPF jawan in Nuapada district, married one Panina of Nagaon in the Loisingha police station limits in May 2013.

In her complaint, Panina alleged that Jyoti Ranjan and his family members had kept her family in dark about his earlier marriage. From his previous marriage, he has a daughter. She said Jyoti Ranjan, however, used to refuse this, but later admitted that he had already been married and had a daughter.

The jawan married one Anushaya of Rourkela in 2012 without informing his family members. At present, Anushaya and her child stay in Rourkela.

Panina alleged that Jyoti Ranjan and his parents used to torture her demanding a dowry of Rs 2 lakh in cash.

Inspector in charge of Balangir town police station Tariq Ahmed said the police had arrested the main accused — the victim’s husband Jyoti Ranjan, his father Peter Suna and mother Manorama Suna — for cheating and torturing her for dowry.

“We arrested the husband and his parents and registered a case under sections 420, 495, 498 (A), 34 of the Indian Penal Code and Section 4 of the Dowry Prevention Act. They were remanded in judicial custody today after a Balangir court rejected their bail plea. One lady sub-inspector is investigating the case,” Ahmed said.

The accused, Jyoti Ranjan, said he had been forced to marry Panina by his family members.
