Man tries to kill self

Guwahati, June 12: Afzal Ahmed, a 36-year old man, tried to commit suicide by consuming poison in front of the state public health engineering department office in Hengrabari, here today.

He was among the multipurpose workers who had come to protest in front of the office.

About 150 multipurpose workers had gathered in the office compound to demand a renewal of their contract, which is over.

According to police sources, Ahmed suddenly took out a bottle of poison and drank a few drops as the protesters were shouting slogans. When he fell on the ground, his fellow workers called an ambulance and he was rushed to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).

Doctors at the hospital managed to treat him before the poison could do much harm.

Afzal consumed poison, probably an insecticide used to kill mosquitoes. He is said to be in a stable condition now, said an officer of Dispur police station.
