School shut

Malda, June 11: A tussle over the school management committee has emerged as the reason behind yesterday’s ransacking of a school in Malda’s Kaliachak.

Akandaberia High School has been shut down for an indefinite period following yesterday’s ransacking of the premises by a mob apparently protesting a hike in the Class XI admission fee.

Headmaster Lakshman Chowdhury said the school’s managing committee was earlier dominated by the CPM. “The secretary of the management committee was Ram Ranjan Mondol of the CPM. He lost the post after his daughter passed HS in 2013. We took in Khudiram Mondol, a Congress leader of the Shahbazpur gram panchayat whose son is in Class VIII. Yesterday’s violence was orchestrated to embarrass the school administration for this.”

Arrested CPM local committee member Sufal Mondol also talked about the presence of the Congress leader in the committee. “There are all kinds of malpractices happening in the school. It is being abetted by the headmaster. He did not consult people of Akandaberia and selected a Congress leader of Shahbazpur to head the school management committee,” he said.

Sufal and four others have been remanded in police custody for six days. The others are Chandan Mondol, CPI pradhan of the local panchayat, Khagen Mondol, a BJP member, Sanatan Mondol, an Intuc leader, and Nikhil Mondol, a BSP member.
