Industry body meets minister

Guwahati, June 11: A delegation from the Federation of Industry and Commerce of North Eastern Region (Finer) today met DoNER minister Gen. (retd) V.K. Singh in New Delhi and submitted a memorandum on issues pertaining to the development of the Northeast.

The highlight of the memorandum was the concept of a Northeast Economic Zone for sustainable development of the region and setting up of a full-fledged North Eastern Statistical Organisation to evolve appropriate and timely strategy for the development of the region.

“The memorandum also highlights region-specific issues such as economic and infrastructure imbalance, connectivity and a focused Northeast banking policy for addressing the banking needs of the region on the lines of the Northeast Industrial and Investment Policy 2007,” a press communiqué from Finer said.

The delegation led by Finer chairman R.S. Joshi also comprised vice-chairmen P. Buragohain and Amit Kumar Jain and director Sandeep Khaitan.

“The memorandum also raised the issue of FDI (foreign direct investment) inclusion for the Northeast region, setting up of quality medical facilities, issues related to agriculture, power, tea and IT industries,” it said.

The DoNER minister appreciated the inputs and suggestions submitted by the delegation and assured full support from his ministry for the development of the region.

He also agreed to an invitation by the industry body to visit the Northeast for interactive sessions with stakeholders.
