Ranchi, June 10: A 25-year-old man was arrested for attempting to assault the Latehar deputy commissioner during a janta durbar at the collectorate today.
Shravan Choubey indulged in a heated argument with DC Mukesh Kumar over dues to the tune of Rs 15, 000 as payment for conducting a survey.
According to eyewitnesses, the youth suddenly turned violent and tried to hit the DC. However, officials and common people present at the durbar nabbed him and handed over to police.
Superintendent of police Michael Raj said an FIR had been registered in this regard and they were interrogating Choubey.
“We are trying to find out if he tried to attack the DC only for the payment or there was any other motive,” the SP added.
Sources said Choubey, a resident of Latehar town, was associated with an NGO, which was roped in by the district administration to carry out an economic survey in urban areas of the district around one-and-a-half years ago. The payment for the survey work is still pending.
They added Choubey had met Kumar in his office a fortnight ago, demanding the dues. Kumar is learnt to have clarified that the dues will be paid to the NGO, and not to any individual, once funds arrived. However, Choubey started an argument with the DC.
“Today, he came to the janta durbar when the DC was busy listening to people’s grievances. He was demanding the dues. But when the DC asked officials present there to take him away, the youth became angry and tried to hit the DC,” said a local scribe, Vibhuti Nath Singh, who was present at the durbar.
