A senior manager of a public sector undertaking in Ranchi was sent to Birsa Munda Central Jail on Tuesday for allegedly trying to outrage the modesty of two nuns the night before.
Mecon official A. Kujur (46) was arrested from his company residence in the capital’s Shyamali Colony late on Monday night after the women, in their early twenties, lodged an FIR with Doranda police.
Based on the complaint, police booked Kujur under Sections 376 (punishment for rape or attempt to rape), 511 (attempt to commit a crime) and 354 (using criminal force on a woman with the intent to outrage her modesty) of the IPC, which prompted subdivisional judicial magistrate S.B. Ojha to order judicial remand for 14 days.
Officer-in-charge of Doranda police station S.K. Srivastava confirmed both the arrest and remand. “Senior manager A. Kujur is associated with the hydro department of Mecon. He brought two nuns to his residence and then tried to force himself upon them. He has been jailed,” he said.
According to what the victims told the police, one of them was an acquaintance of Kujur and hence did not suspect trouble when the Mecon official offered them a lift in his car.
“The nuns had gone to the station to see off a priest who was leaving for Dumka on Vananchal Express. There they bumped into Kujur around 3pm. The manager offered to drive them home to Chutia, but instead took a detour to his empty quarters as his wife and children were away on vacation. He shut the door, undressed and tried to molest the women. He indulged in other indecent activities, according to the FIR,” an officer said.
He added that the two victims managed to escape from his clutches and reach the police station around 5pm.
OC Srivastava refused to share any more details, but insisted that the IPC sections (376, 511 and 354) they charged Kujur with was justified.
“Prima facie, the allegations have been found to be true. Hence, a case has been registered under relevant sections. The senior manager is in jail. Investigations have started. We cannot share anything more right now.”
Kujur’s residence was found locked on Tuesday since his family is not in town.
Neighbours claimed they had no clue about what happened on Monday night. “This morning, I heard he (Kujur) tried to rape nuns and has been sent to jail. I am new in this locality and did not really interact with him much,” said one who refused to be named.
Most others shied away from talking to the media on the issue.
Mecon’s deputy GM (in-charge), corporate communications, Rana Chakraborty parried pointed questions on the matter.
“The case is related to an individual and the company is not involved here. Besides, we are yet to receive any official information in this regard,” he said.
