Silchar, June 8: Police are on the lookout for suspected militants who shot and injured a 60-year-old man in Rakhalbasti village under Raytabari block in Karimganj district last night and abducted his 13-year-old grandson and another relative.
Police sources said a gang of around 15 armed men broke into the house of Sudam Vaishnav, 60, around 8.30 last night and shot him before taking away his grandson, Prashanta, and another relative, Basu, 18.
Sudam was admitted in Dhullavcherra primary health centre near the village with bullet injuries and later referred to Silchar Medical College and Hospital in Ghoongur near here late last night.
Rakhalbasti village, near the border between Karimganj and Hailakandi, is 115km from here and around 480km from Guwahati.
Karimganj superintendent of police B.P. Rava told this correspondent today over phone that police teams had launched a search operation in the nearby forests of Chatachurra hills under Ratabari block of Karimganj district to trace the abducted duo. Sources said apart from Assam police personnel, CRPF and IRB jawans have been deployed in the search.
According to information received by the police, the abduction was planned by the cadres of United Democratic Liberation Army (UDLA), an outfit active in the Barak valley. Another police source said the 57 Mountain Division of the army posted at Masimpur cantonment near Silchar has been put on an alert to help the police forces. However, the army is yet to be deployed in the search operation till this afternoon.
The UDLA was formed in 2006 by some former cadres of another outfit, the United Liberation Front of Barak Valley, led by Pauchau Ram Reang, which surrendered to the police in December 2009. Shisuram Reang, 32, now leads the UDLA. He is a relative of Dhainara Reang, 45, who was arrested by Mizoram police in 2013.
