Stalkers chop off girl’s ear

Srinagar, June 6: Stalkers chopped off the ear of a Class X girl after she and her schoolmates returning from a picnic resisted their molestation bid in a south Kashmir village yesterday.

Seven youths have been held over the attack that sparked protests in Verinag, the victim’s village in Anantnag district.

The youths had allegedly chased a bus in which the girls were returning from the picnic in Pahalgam.

The officer in charge of the local police station has been suspended over allegations that he tried to shield the accused by initially claiming that the girl lost her ear after falling from the bus.

“Some boys chased the girls, passed lewd remarks and made obscene gestures. One of the girls was attacked by them with a sharp weapon that severed her ear,” another police officer said.

The officer said the girl was discharged from hospital today, but added her ear lobe could not be fixed. The victim’s father blamed the youths and the school authorities. “Only one peon was accompanying the girls in the bus.”

He said the boys chased the bus in their vehicle and attacked his daughter when she was getting off.

Later today, the Anantnag chief education officer ordered the suspension of Farooq Ahmad, the school’s vice-principal.
