Seized ‘pistol’ is a lighter

A “pistol” that was seized from three youths, who were beaten black and blue by Nagri residents for allegedly attempting to abduct a local intermediate student on June 2, has turned out to be a lighter shaped like the firearm, police said.

Officer-in-charge of Nagri police station Rajesh Kumar, who slapped a case against the youths for the kidnap attempt and possessing illegal arms, made the discovery while observing the object closely a day after seizing it.

“The lighter appeared like a 9mm pistol. When I examined it on June 3, I was astonished to find that it’s actually a lighter shaped like a pistol. But since the case has already been forwarded to court, I thought it proper to get the lighter tested by ballistic experts for official confirmation and sent it to the police lines today (Friday),” Kumar said.

Sergeant major of Ranchi police lines Tushar Kant Jha said he sent back the lighter without doing the tests. “We cannot test any object without the court’s permission and hence, sent back the lighter,” Jha said.

Accused Chotu, Pappu and Nayeem, aged between 25 and 30 years, have been released from RIMS. They were sent to jail on Friday.
