A man convicted for the murder of a city-based promoter over a decade ago and out on bail for the last few months was arrested on extortion charges on Wednesday.
The accused, Raja Dutta, was arrested from New Alipore on Wednesday afternoon.
Dutta had allegedly demanded Rs 25 lakh at gunpoint from a real estate developer. “According to complainant J. Kamdar, he was threatened at least twice. Based on his complaints lodged with Lake and Behala police stations, we arrested Dutta on Wednesday afternoon,” said joint commissioner (crime) Pallab Kanti Ghosh.
Police said Dutta and his men went to one of Kamdar’s construction sites in Behala last month and threatened him. Kamdar lodged a complaint with Behala police station.
On Tuesday, Dutta allegedly went to Kamdar’s office on Ashwini Dutta Road and repeated the demand for Rs 25 lakh. Kamdar then lodged a second complaint with Lake police station on Tuesday.
Acting on a tip-off, the anti-rowdy squad of the detective department arrested Dutta from near his home in Sahapur Colony of New Alipore. He will be produced in court on Thursday. The other accused in the case, are absconding.
