Sarania status

Kokrajhar, May 30: Gauhati High Court has issued an interim order to the All-Tribal Sangha to stop issuing a tribe certificate to Sarania Kacharis and to only issue the certificate only to persons belonging to the categories listed in central order number 22 (as amended till date).

The order by Justice B.D. Agarwal was passed following a writ petition filed by the Janajati Suraksha Samity.

The petitioner, Janaklal Basumatary, a member of the Scheduled Tribe, and Ashok Kumar Brahma, the secretary of the Janajati Suraksha Samity, Kokrajhar district committee, challenged the Scheduled Tribe status of the newly elected MP from Kokajhar, Naba Kumar Sarania.
