Calcutta: Robin Uthappa and Gautam Gambhir have been the most successful batsmen for the Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL VII. So it wasn’t really surprising when both of them were selected for the Indian ODI and Test squads, respectively, on Wednesday.
According to Knights’ batting coach Woorkeri Raman, the duo’s return to national team colours have plenty to do with their patience and determination.
“Robin has been batting the best I’ve seen him do… He’s been the Pied Piper of KKR. Previously, he used to be regarded as someone with loads of potential with a tendency to play his shots. But in the last couple of years, he has worked on his game and his mental aspect… He knows what to focus on,” Raman told The Telegraph at the team hotel, on Thursday.
“For both Robin and Gautam, the call-up in the Indian team is a reward of their determination to keep working on their game and their persistence. They always had faith in their abilities and backed themselves up by being patient and determined. I think both of them have got back to where they should be,” he added.
The former India opener is also extremely happy with his past pupils Manoj Tiwary and Wriddhiman Saha have also got the selectors’ nod.
“Manoj has been unfortunate, always getting injured at the wrong time. That said, he deserves a lot of credit for being able to impress the selectors despite having few opportunities to play last season. Wriddhi, too, has been unfortunate, as he has to compete with one Mahendra Singh Dhoni,” said Raman.
