Form-ing base for mayor race

The process for Ranchi mayor poll, which was notified on Wednesday, made a sluggish start with no nominations being filed on Thursday, the first day for doing so.

However, respresentatives of four aspirants — including former mayor Rama Khalkho who figured in last April’s cash muddle a day ahead of the election, which was then cancelled — collected nomination forms for the June 23 polling.

Returning officer Ravi Shankar Verma said the other hopefuls were Arun John Prabal, Gagan Kachchap and Michael Ekka. He further said that soon after the mayor poll was notified, three other candidates had obtained nomination forms by depositing the security money of Rs 2,500 each. They are Varsha Gari, Ajit Oraon and Devi Dayal Munda.

Like last year, this time too, a leaflet is being given to every candidate along with the nomination form to remind them that third-time parents (in 2013) will be debarred from contesting the election.

The annexure, released by district election officer and deputy commissioner Vinay Kumar Choubey, refers to provisions under the Jharkhand Municipal Act, 2011, with regards to married candidates.

As a ready reckoner, mayor hopefuls are also being provided with a check list for filling nominations.

It highlights important points that candidates need to remember, including the campaign expenditure cap of Rs 5 lakh and minimum age limit of 30 years.

Aspirants also need to submit caste certificate and RMC tax clearance documents with their nomination form. They must also have their name on the voter list of the ward they belong to.
