Calcutta: The West Indies coach Ottis Gibson is pleased to have legends Garfield Sobers and Curtly Ambrose on board ahead of the three-Test Series against New Zealand. The first Test starts at Sabina Park, Jamaica, from June 8.
While Sobers will be working with the batsmen till the first Test begins, Ambrose is the new bowling consultant and will work with the team during the Test as well as the two-T20 series.
Gibson said young players can learn a lot from Sobers.
“Sobers is the best of the best and it is great to have him join us. He is still an avid follower of the game, so he sees a lot of things. He is here to pass on his knowledge to the youngsters,” Gibson said.
“The guys like Darren Bravo and young Kieran Powell have been very receptive and his wisdom will not be lost on the experienced guys like Shiv Chanderpaul and Marlon Samuels either. All the guys will get the opportunity to speak to Sobers about their game, which can only be a good thing for us.
“Hopefully, over the next couple of the days, the guys will really use him as a springboard for where they are in their game and what he thinks they need to do to take their game to the next level,” he added.
Gibson said Ambrose could make a huge impact on the West Indies bowlers since he is heavily involved in monitoring domestic cricket in the West Indies.
