Bullish on Suarez

Montevideo: Uruguay striker Luis Suarez is progressing “very well” after undergoing keyhole surgery on his left knee although his chances of playing at the World Cup are still in the balance, the team doctor said on Monday. “It’s only been a few days since the operation but we can say that progress is very good,” Alberto Pan said. “It would be adventurous to set a timeline but we’re bullish on Suarez. We have nearly three weeks ahead of us.”

London: Midfielder Niko Kranjcar has become the third player to withdraw from the Croatia World Cup squad due to injury in the last week and will miss the finals in Brazil, the Croatian Football Federation said on Tuesday. The 29-year-old was injured playing for Queens Park Rangers in their 1-0 Championship play-off win over Derby County at Wembley on Saturday when they won promotion back to the Premier League.

Berlin: Bayern Munich forward Claudio Pizarro has extended his contract with the domestic double winners by one season to 2015, the Bavarians said on Tuesday.

Male: The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has warned the Maldives authorities not to investigate the running of the AFC Challenge Cup or risk their soccer team being banned from international competition.

The governing body for Asian football issued the warning after local media reported that the Maldives Anti-Corruption Commissionhad seized documents from the offices of the Maldives FA (FAM).

New Delhi: The Indian women’s badminton team, which bagged the bronze medal in the Uber Cup recently, would be given a cash award of Rs 40 lakh by the Badminton Association of India (BAI). The chief coach of Indian team, Gopichand, would receive a separate cash award of Rs 10 lakh for receiving Padma Bhushan, a press release from BAI said.

St Martin: Nico Rosberg hopes his rocky relationship with Mercedes’ teammate Lewis Hamilton will improve despite the rift between them after last weekend’s Monaco GP.

“I make an effort for teamwork and to have a good atmosphere in the team. It is a bit more difficult internally at the moment. But it has happened in the past and there is no reason why it cannot happen now,” Rosberg said.
