New Delhi: The ad hoc committee of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) on Friday dropped Olympic bronze medallist MC Mary Kom from the squad for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, after the star pugilist lost to Haryana girl Pinki Jangra in the trials for the 51 kg at the Patiala.
“We are saddened by the fact that a boxer of Mary Kom’s calibre had to be dropped from the squad. But that fact remains that Pinki proved far better than Mary in the trials. The selection committee had no option,” said an IOA official.
Former World championship silver medallist L Sarita Devi has managed to make the squad in the 60 kg category. It could be recalled that Sarita was initially a 51 kg boxer but shifted to 60 kg after Mary Kom decided to elevate herself from 48 kg to 51 kg.
