MGM patient cries molestation

A 25-year-old woman undergoing treatment at MGM Medical College and Hospital in Sakchi created a ruckus in the wee hours of Friday, saying a Home Guard jawan had molested her in sleep.

The accused is yet to be identified.

Though the victim has not filed any police complaint, the state-run heal hub and the private security agency supplying personnel to it have begun investigations on. Apart from private personnel, Home Guard also provides security to the hospital.

A resident of Murakati village in Ghatshila subdivision, the victim was undergoing treatment for head injuries allegedly inflicted by her husband over a domestic dispute a week ago. She was admitted to the female ward (bed No. 20) on the first floor of the surgical building.

There were about a dozen women, including eight patients, in the ward at the time of the incident. The victim’s mother, who attends to her, was sleeping on the floor.

“Around midnight, a Home Guard jawan came to our ward and asked us to keep the door open at night as it was too hot. We heeded his advice. Around 2.30am, I felt someone on the bed. I woke up with a start to see a man beside me. It was the same person, who had asked us to keep the door open,” the woman said.

The victim started shouting and as lights came on, the accused fled.

On Friday morning, Home Guard inspector Loco Devgam and Home Guard in-charge Madan Chaudhury were informed about the incident. Despite a thorough check, the accused could not be found.

“We are trying to find out the person who allegedly molested the woman patient. If he is found to belong to the Home Guard force, we will take legal steps against him,” Chaudhury promised.

Hospital superintendent S.K. Chowdhury was also worried. “This is a very serious allegation. If it is found to be true, the entire security system of the hospital will have to be overhauled,” said S.K. Chowdhury, also in-charge of RIMS in Ranchi.

The scared lady left the hospital in the afternoon along with her mother.
