Kin of heroes in land stir

Descendants of freedom fighters staged a demonstration at the district collectorate in Jamshedpur on Friday against the East Singhbhum administration’s failure to give land for a housing colony despite repeated assurances.

The members of Singhbhum Zilla Swatantra Senani Evam Utradhikari Sangh also plan to take up the matter with chief minister Hemant Soren and acting chief secretary Sajal Chakraborty in Ranchi on Tuesday if the administration did not act by then.

“And, if nothing happens by August, we will boycott the Independence Day function at Gopal Maidan,” said convener Jagannath Mohanty.

In 2010, Jamshedpur East MLA Raghubar Das had promised the land for a residential colony of freedom fighters and their kin. In 2012, then deputy chief minister Hemant too said he would to look into the demand. But, not much happened after that.

Sources said district officials had identified two acres at Chhota Banki, 10km from the city, but the land reforms department was yet to clear the project. ADC Ganesh Kumar added: “I have asked the circle officer to look into the issue and report on the status of the land at Chhota Banki. We will take steps according to legal provisions.”
