Aftab Ansari and Jamiluddin Nasir have to part with a piece of fish or an egg every week for being spared the noose.
The Supreme Court order on Wednesday commuting the death sentence of Ansari and Nasir to life imprisonment and 30 years in jail without remission, respectively, have earned the duo privileges they were denied as death row convicts — such as the freedom to step out of their 10ftX10ft cells.
“From now, like any other lifer, Ansari and Nasir would be allowed to step out of their cells from time to time, participate in daily chores and interact with other inmates. They will also be able to earn money for the work they do in jail,” said an officer.
“Besides, they will get the opportunity to go out of the jail on parole. The law allows a lifer to go out on parole for a month at a stretch, subject to conditions.”
Ansari and Nasir were denied all these as death row convicts.
The “privileges” the duo used to get while awaiting the noose were:
nAn extra piece of fish/egg/meat a week
nSpecially cooked chapattis
nService of a guard posted in front of the cell throughout the day and night. The guard helps the convict if he needs anything.
“Ansari and Nasir are yet to get the benefits of lifers as a copy of the Supreme Court order has not yet reached the jail. Both are high-risk prisoners. We have to decide whether some rules need to be modified,” said an official of the home department.
Jail sources said Ansari looked “spirited” in his cell at Alipore jail, while Nasir was “jubilant” when he had a re-union with family members who visited him in his Presidency jail cell on Thursday.
