We are keeping our fingers crossed, says captain Rohit

Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma on Wednesday praised his teammates and said that anything was possible after they beat table-toppers Kings XI Punjab by seven wickets in Mohali.

“We are now definitely in the mix. Anything is possible now. We are keeping our fingers crossed. The important thing for us now would be carry on the kind of good work that we have been doing for the last few days and put up a performance that is expected of us,” said Rohit at the post-match presentation.

Rohit also maintained that they didn’t have any clue about what was going wrong with the team during the UAE leg, but everything seemed to have fallen in place ever since they returned to the country, especially their home ground – the Wankhede Stadium.

Excerpts

Rohit Sharma: Today’s was a great win. This is the potential that we have got. I had earlier spoken many times about the kind of character that we have in the dressing room. We were really desperate to win this one and wanted to clinch this match at any cost. We have been working on all possibilities for the last couple of days.

In the first five matches that we played in Dubai… we couldn’t get any win. It’s difficult to know what exactly went wrong. But ever since we came back at our home ground the Wankhede Stadium, everything seems to have fallen in place for us.

It’s good to return to Mumbai with a win. We are now definitely in the mix. Anything is possible now. We are keeping our fingers crossed. The important thing for us now would be carry on the kind of good work that we have been doing for the last few days and put up a performance that is expected of us.

George Bailey: It was the sort of pitch where it would have been good to chase. You’d have to agree. It did get a little quicker in the second half of the game. Moreover, we lost a few quick wickets during the middle overs. In the end, we fell about 10–15 runs short.

Momentum is very important in this format. We shouldn’t be losing that winning habit. Anyway, we still took the match to the last over. I would say it was an okay performance.

But I must say it was a phenomenal innings from Simmons. We were completely outplayed. We are still on the top of the pile and it is important for us to keep doing the right things.

It was good to see Shaun Marsh play well. Mitchell Johnson is recovering from a niggle. So, Beuran got a couple of matches to play well. In a way, it was a good thing to do… rotating a few players. This will help them comeback fresher.

Lendl Simmons (MoM): I am very happy to have scored the first century of this season’s IPL. I would like to thank my team Mumbai Indians for giving me a chance to play for them. It was a very good moment for me when I got the call to play for MI… I was very excited. It was a nice feeling. It was a very good track and the ball was coming on nicely. I like playing the slog sweeps very much. So, I really enjoyed the one that I played today.
