Roll ball meet from tomorrow

Guwahati, May 21: The Assam Roll Ball Association will host the eighth National Sub-junior Roll Ball Championship at the indoor stadium of Tepesia sports complex on outskirts of the city from May 23 to 25.

Over 400 players from 15 out of 25 affiliated state units of the Roll Ball Federation of India will participate in the boys’ and girls’ event, said ARBA president Miftauddin Ahmed. The participating states are Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Nagaland, Chhattisgarh, Kerala, Puducherry, Telengana and hosts Assam.

Ahmed said public works department (PWD) commissioner Mohan Boro would inaugurate the tournament at 11am on Friday.

He said the players and the tournament officials would be accommodated in the Tepesia sports complex.

The sport originated in Pune and is a relatively new one in Assam, but the state players have been putting up an impressive show in the national meets during the last few years, claimed association secretary Bhumidhar Barman. The sport is a combination of roller skating, basketball and handball played at a fast pace in 20-minute matches. Barman hoped the state team, which is training at the T. Ao Indoor Stadium of Cotton College here, would give a tough fight in the tournament. Maharashtra are the defending champions in both boys’ and girls’ events and Assam are last year’s runners-up.

The association has also announced the state contingent for the tournament. The boys’ team comprises Deepjyoti Saikia (captain), Apalok J. Baruah, Mantavya Sarma, Gaurav Das, B.A. Kargil, Harshit Sethi, Arihant Jain, Sanjib Kumar, Manash Gogoi, Saurav Pattar, Anish Podder and Ramo Bordoloi.
