Tura, May 20: Police today arrested the accused involved in serving an extortion note to a Catholic institution in Ampati recently.

Somsing Marak of Arenggre village in South West Garo Hills was arrested from his village this morning for his involvement in the extortion call to St Claret’s School, Ampati on May 14. Catholic institutions in Garo hills had announced a one-day closure today because of the threat.

The district police chief, R. Muthu, expressed his appreciation to the team led by additional superintendent of police L.M. Sangma and inspector C.D. Shira for its efforts in apprehending the culprit. He said further investigation was on to find the co-accused in the crime.

On Monday, deputy commissioner Ram Singh had also expressed his anguish over a similar threat to a reputed school in the district.

“Issuing such a threat to an institution that is doing yeomen’s service is an act of stupidity and cowardice,” he said.

He has also urged the nokmas (headmen) and parents to be vigilant against such criminals in their respective villages. Otherwise, even the district officials would be wary of making field visits to their villages for fear of extortion and intimidation, he added.
